Clubs
We are a small school with a big heart. Our clubs are run by our own staff, who give their time generously on top of their teaching and support roles, and they are free to attend unless stated otherwise (run by KidzActive). What we offer may be modest in number, but each one is chosen to give our children something they will remember — a chance to be active, creative, curious and calm.
Our clubs sit at the heart of our curriculum drivers: reading and oracy, physical development, and the wider opportunities and experiences we want every Ashdon child to have.
Current Clubs
Running Club
Tuesday lunchtimes are for getting outside and moving. Children run at their own pace, build their stamina week by week and cheer each other on — no experience needed, just trainers and a bit of determination. It is also perfect preparation for the Ashdon Fun Run in the summer term.
Reading with Jaffle
Jaffle, our miniature dachshund, is Ashdon’s reading and wellbeing dog, and he holds court in the Headteacher’s office from Tuesday to Friday. At break and lunchtimes children can come and read to him. Jaffle is a wonderfully patient listener: he never corrects, never hurries and never minds a tricky word. For children building confidence, fluency or simply a love of books, reading aloud to a dog takes all the pressure away. Look out for our Pawsome Reader of the Week in Celebration Assembly.
Cooking Club
On Wednesdays after school, children get their hands into flour, weigh, chop, taste and take something home. Alongside the practical skills, they learn about where food comes from, how to eat well and how to work safely and sensibly in a kitchen. Younger children are fully supported at every step, and all recipes are planned with our allergy and dietary requirements in mind. [Note any charge, ingredient costs or booking arrangements here.]
Art Club
Friday lunchtimes are given over to making. Mrs Jarmain and Mrs Alderman lead a relaxed, creative session for our Key Stage 2 children, experimenting with drawing, painting, printing, collage and sculpture — with time to enjoy the process rather than rush to a finished piece. Work often finds its way onto our display boards around school.
How to join
Running Club, Reading with Jaffle and Art Club all run during the school day, so no additional arrangements are needed — children simply come along. Cooking Club runs after school (KidzActive).
If your child would like a place, please contact KidzActive or email admin@ashdon.essex.sch.uk.
If a club is full, we will keep your child’s name on the list for the next round.
