Support available across Essex for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, aged 0 to 25.

Every local authority must publish a Local Offer: a single place where families can find out what support is available in their area for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. It covers education, health and social care, and it runs from birth to the age of 25.

Essex County Council’s Local Offer is published at send.essex.gov.uk. It was written with local families and parent carer groups, and it is kept up to date by the council rather than by schools.

What you can find there

• Help available at nursery, school and college, and how to work with staff to get the right support in place

• First steps if SEND is new to you — who to talk to and what happens next

• Social care, including short breaks for families of disabled children

Essex also runs Local Offer roadshows across the county, where you can speak face to face with SEND practitioners and local support services, and publishes a monthly newsletter bringing together news from education, health and social care.

Ordinarily Available

Alongside the Local Offer, Essex publishes Ordinarily Available — a shared set of expectations about the provision and practice families can expect in any mainstream Essex early years setting, school or post-16 provider. It is a useful document if you want to know what should be in place for your child as a matter of course, before any additional or specialist support is considered. Independent advice for families

Sometimes families want advice from someone who is not the school and not the council. These services are free, confidential and impartial.
